本ボックスセットは、ルー・リード、ジョン・ケイル、ブライアン・イーノ、タンジェリン・ドリーム、ケヴィン・エアーズ、ルッツ・ウルリッヒ、ティム・ハーディン、ザ・ブルー・オーキッド、ザ・ファクションといった豪華アーティストとニコの伝説的といえる貴重な音源をぎっしり集めた10CD。

 

DISC.1-2は1970年4月にルー・リードとニコが共にリハーサルを行った伝説的な録音。正確な時期や状況については未だに不明な点があり、ファンやコレクターの間で議論の的となっているもの。ルーがアコースティック・ギターでニコのソロ公演をバックアップする予定で、ニューヨークのリチャード&リサ・ロビンソン邸のアパートで行われたものの、結果としてその公演自体は実現しませんでした。DISC.3は74年10月、ニコとジョン・ケイルによるベルリンでの録音。DISC.4は74年のタンジェリン・ドリームと行ったコラボレーション。DISC.5は75年8月のケヴィン・エアーズとの録音。アイランド・レコードのレーベルメイトでもあった2人による8月6日にフランス・アルルのアルル競技場で行われたライヴ公演。DISC.6は長年のパートナーであり共同制作者であるルッツ・グラフ=ウルブリッヒとの78年2月のベルリン録音。DISC.7は再びジョン・ケイルとの音源で、ケイル・プロデュース&アレンジによるニコの代表的なソロ作を制作していた時期の音源。DISC.8は1979年6月5日、ロサンゼルスのウィスキー・ア・ゴーゴーで、ティム・ハーディン、ルッツ・ウルブリッヒとともに行った演奏。ヴェルヴェッツ時代やソロの代表曲に加え、ティム・ハーディンの楽曲も演奏されました。DISC.9は82年1月、ザ・フォールの元メンバーによって結成されたマンチェスターのポストパンク・バンド、ザ・ブルー・オーキッズとの音源。DISC.10は86年2月、ザ・ファクションとともにニュージーランドで行ったツアーからの音源。このツアーは、ニコの最後のアルバム『カメラ・オブスキュラ』におけるコラボレーションからつながるものでした。貴重な音源が一挙に集められた、彼女のみならずヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド好きも注目のボックス・セットです。

なんと、あの伝説的アート系レコードカタログ及び指南書"Broken Music"の続編が登場！！ベルリンの伝説的ギャラリー兼レコード店Gelbe Musikのオーナー”ウルスラ・ブロック”が1989年に巡回展として開催した[Broken Music. The essential continuation of Ursula Block's legendary 1989 Broken Music. Artists' Recordworks exhibition and publication. This volume traces the development of the vinyl record as an artistic medium from the post-war period to the present across seven decades. Based on the 2022-2023 exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin, curated by Sven Beckstette and Ingrid Buschmann, the book presents over 700 records arranged in ten chapters, establishing links between fine art and the fields of composition, improvisation, pop, punk, and techno. In 1989, Ursula Block, owner of the legendary gelbe MUSIK record store (1981-2014) in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, created the touring exhibition Broken Music. Artists' Recordworks with art historian Michael Glasmeier. That groundbreaking project established the vinyl record as a key medium for the multifaceted exchange of art and music. Broken Music Vol. 2 expands this legacy, documenting iconic covers by Andy Warhol and Barbara Kruger, sound installations by Christina Kubisch and Susan Philipsz, recorded performances and readings from Anne Imhof to Jimmie Durham, and works by countless artists who recognized the creative potential of vinyl. In 2019, the Nationalgalerie acquired an extensive collection of records from Ursula Block with support from the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung and Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung. Thanks to the Friends of the National Gallery and numerous donations, this collection has been expanded and updated. gelbe MUSIK was a pilgrimage site for collectors, artists, and musicians including John Cage, Yoko Ono, Sonic Youth, and Björk. Broken Music Vol. 2 celebrates the resilience of the vinyl record—once written off in the digital age, now regaining popularity as collector's item and artistic medium.

作曲家自身が頑なに演奏する事を拒否し続けていた、今回が初出となる歴史的音源!!ミュージック・コンクレートの創始者らに師事しながらも、チベット仏教に深く関係した唯一無二のスタイルで超深淵な持続音作品を提示し続けてきた重鎮コンポーザーEliane Radigue。彼女の最も古い作品として知られる、フィボナッチ数列を用いたグラフィックスコア作品[Asymptote Versatile](1963-64年)が遂に録音ブツとして初の音源化!! Radigue自身がコンサートでの演奏を頑なに拒否していた作品だった為、まさに歴史的偉業と言って良い快挙なリリースであり、本作にはハダースフィールド現代音楽祭で披露された世界初演のライブを収録。過去にも彼女の作品に参加している超ベテランハープ奏者Rhodri Davies率いるアンサンブルが演奏を担当、彼女の美学を忠実に実践してきた"Occam Ocean"のソリストたちも多数参加した最強の名演。

Amgen presents the historic recording of Éliane Radigue's Asymptote Versatile (1963-64), widely recognized as the oldest surviving composition by the pioneering French electronic music composer. This monumental work was performed for the very first time at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival on November 26, 2023, marking a truly historic event as Radigue had resolutely refused permission for this work to be presented in concert - until now. The legendary composer referred to her 1960s works as "propositions sonores," rather than compositions, and this piece is the only one she kept from that formative period. The graphic score comprises logarithmic curves devised from the Fibonacci sequence, superimposed over sheets of additional notation, to be performed as sustained tones by up to four groups of acoustic instrumentalists spanning the full range of the audible spectrum.

Asymptote Versatile sows the seeds of Radigue's exploration of long durational forms, bridging a 50-year gap between the school of composers she met in 1960s New York and her 2011-onwards OCCAM OCEAN series, where she composes for individual instrumentalists. Convened by Rhodri Davies, this exceptional ensemble features many of the OCCAM soloists who have worked closely with Radigue, steeped in the aesthetics and methods of her practice: Xavier Charles (clarinet), Angharad Davies (violin), Rhodri Davies (harp), Julia Eckhardt (viola), Bertrand Gauguet (alto saxophone), Susan Geaney (bass flute), Dominic Lash (double bass), Thierry Madiot (bass trombone), Aonghus McEvoy (guitar), Hannah Miller (french horn), Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh (viola), and Carol Robinson (bass clarinet).

Radigue herself reflected on the work's origins: "I was young when I composed the Fibonacci suite. I was in New York at that time… During this period of my life I was very interested in mathematics and for this piece I constructed a logarithmic spiral. It is to do with the infinitesimal; the ever-changing, until its destruction in the dance of constant change. […] In one's interpretation, it's important to stay flexible, to avoid rigidity. You can think of the piece as your asymptote … but you are free, it is important to remain free."

Only the recordings from August 14th, 1972 (Elixir-Relativity Suite) were made in a recording studio. The rest of the material consists of documentation recordings made on portable machines, some of them carried out under awkward acoustic conditions.
