「セピア印刷。本文は西脇順三郎のノートの複写です。定価表記はありませんが、頒価は送料共15,000円だった」という話です。

大学図書館所蔵はわずか9件で、古書として入手困難の希覯本です。状態のよいものは非常に珍しいと言えます。

川端康成、三島由紀夫とノーベル文学賞受賞を争い、希有の詩人として知られる西脇の、異色の学者としての研究の集大成です。
西脇先生は「ギリシア語の特定の単語と漢語の特定の単語との類似性をよく指摘していた」そうです。とても興味を引く内容で楽しめます。

以下、ご参考までーー
本文では、「禹（ウ）」はゼウスの「ウ」である、中国の聖天子「禹」の語源はインド＝ヨーロッパ最高の神「ゼウス」である、両者は本質的に同じものである、というような西脇独自の考察が展開されます。

序文よりーー
「漢語とインド・ヨーロッパ語系の言語との比較言語学が成立するか否かは未だ不可解のものであるが、私は一つの仮定のもとでこれらの両言語の語彙の比較をすることが最初の仕事と考えたい。
漢語はインド・ヨーロッパ語系の言語というのではなく、しかし古代から伝承されている中国語はインド・ヨーロッパ語系の言語がその文法においても、その語彙においても、破壊された歴史的基盤の上に立っているものと想像される。」

「晩年の西脇順三郎がもっとも心血を注いだ作業が、ギリシャ 語と漢語の意味音韻をめぐる比較研究であったことは、よく知られている。だがその膨大な作業が、彼の詩作や言語観、とど う関係しているのかはけっして充分に論じられているとはいえ ないし、近代日本のみならず西欧を含んだ世界における言語の 神秘哲学のなかでそれを位置付けるという試みはいまだになさ れていない。わたしがこれから書こうとするのは、われわれの 言語文化研究所のそもそもの設立起源にも深く関係している西 脇のこの最後の業績を、今日的観点から捕らえ直し、翻って彼 の詩作品との関係を理解し、詩人が生涯にわたって説き続けた ポエジーの再検討に至ろうとするものである。西脇順三郎がそ の長い生涯になしとげた文学的営為はあまりに巨大であって、しばしば深遠な古代の森のようにわたしには感じられる。蛇を 恐れない盲人のごとくにそのなかに踏み入り、枝の二、三本を 拾い集めてきた者の報告として、お読みいただければと思う。」

First press contains the song - "When Lights Are Low" (Disc 8, Track 4), which is repeated again on (Disc 9, Track 2) but is titled "Laura". This Repress corrects that problem.

Initial run of 10,000 copies was housed in a textured cover, pressed by the WEA pressing plant in West Drayton and sold until October 1979. Another 10,000 copies were sold until Mid 1980. Reissued / repressed again in July 1980 (so that until July 1981, 77.523 copies were pressed in total). The Townhouse edition is from late 1980. Later confirmed represses from 1981 and 1983.

Peaked at # 71 in the UK Album Charts in August 1980.

Recorded in April 1979 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport. Also recorded during these sessions were the tracks "Autosuggestion" and "From Safety To Where...?" (both released on Earcom 2) as well as "Exercise One", "The Only Mistake", "Walked In Line" and "The Kill" (all later released on Still).

Outside is side A and Inside is side B. This however got mixed up by the pressing plant, assigning Outside = B and Inside = A in the runouts.

The centre sleeve depicts "100 consecutive pulses from the pulsar CP 1919", taken from an image that Bernard Sumner found in 'The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy' (page 111, 1977 edition), which was a reproduction of a visualization created by Harold D. Craft, Jr., for his dissertation “Radio Observations of the Pulse Profiles and Dispersion Measures of Twelve Pulsars,” (September 1970).
