Spiritual Unity

ESP-DISK
ESPDISK 1002LP
RELEASE DATE
5/4/2009
2019 repress. LP version. 180 gram virgin vinyl. Pressed in the United States with original artwork restored. Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people's eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February '64, in New York, but this was the first album on which neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP's first jazz recording. Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler's sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody. Meanwhile, under and around the leader's unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments.

2020 repress; expanded reissue. Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people's eyes/ears, infamous). Meanwhile, under and around the leader's unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments. This 50th Anniversary Expanded Edition includes as a bonus the track briefly substituted for "Spirits" on an early vinyl edition. It is the same tune known as "Vibrations" on the album of that title on Arista/Freedom (aka Ghosts when issued on Debut) and as "[tune Q]2" on the Revenant box set Holy Ghost. This is the first time both "Spirits" and "Vibrations" have been on an ESP edition of Spiritual Unity.

Since their launch shortly after the outset of the new millennium, few labels working within the territories of the vinyl reissue and archival release, have reached the heights charted by Vinyl On Demand. Beyond the greatest quality and care embedded within their efforts - redefining the idea of deluxe, they have elevated countless remarkable and overlooked creative gestures from the shadows of history, entirely recalibrating the legacies of music which exists outside of mainstream interest, placing the diverse actions of the underground in conversation with each other. Their catalog is among the most dazzling that can be called to mind.Of all the releases compiled by the label in the last few years, this one is by some distance their biggest coup. It almost seems impossible, but for this wonderful Come Organisation box-set they have managed to raise their own incredibly high bar again.
The Come Organisation was a record label founded in London in 1979, initially as a vehicle for the group Come. In 1978 Come had recorded their first single, Come Sunday / Shaved Slits, and were unable to find a label willing to release it. Influenced by Industrial Records (Throbbing Gristle's label) and Ralph Records (The Residents' label), William Bennett opted to self-release the single.
Come ceased to exist in 1980 (even though the I'm Jack LP was released in 1981) as the band morphed into Whitehouse. Come Organisation would become known as a label specialized in extreme electronic music, showcased by the releases of Sutcliffe Jugend and Leibstandarte SS MB in addition to Whitehouse.
Celebrating the label’s 40th Anniversary of its first release in November 1979, Vinyl On Demand is now proud to bring us the release of an ultimate deluxe retrospective set including 9x LPs in folder format with special sleeves + bonus Examples of Cannibalism 10" vinyl + a beautiful 212pp book + a truly massive poster. All of this is housed in a stunning embossed slipcase holder.
The book included in this limited edition box-set contains masses of unseen archive photos, posters, artist bios, stories, notes and all the Kata zines. Please note this is in a strictly limited edition of 585 signed copies with special certificate.
Box includes the following items:
- Come "Rampton" (LP)
- Various Artists "The Second Coming" (LP)

音楽 : Thollem/Parker/Cline-Gowanus Sessions II(ESP-Disk')
Thollem/Parker/Cline
Gowanus Sessions II
ADVANCE ORDER: January 31, 2020 release
Gowanus Session II was seven years in the planning. Thollem, Nels Cline, and William Parker convened at Peter Karl Studios in Brooklyn on January 3rd, 2012 and recorded two complete albums. The first was Gowanus Session I, released by Porter Records in April of that year. GS II was put aside to eventually complete the five-album palindromic cycle of trio albums Nels and Thollem ambitiously set out to realize. The albums in between include Radical Empathy with Michael Wimberly (Relative Pitch), Molecular Affinity with Pauline Oliveros (Roaratorio), and Reality and Other Imaginary Places, with Michael Wimberly (ESP-Disk').
William Parker debuted on ESP-Disk' in the mid-'70s on Frank Lowe's classic album Black Beings (ESP3013), with additional material from that session released as The Loweski (ESP4066). He returned to the label this century with Mat Walerian's group Toxic (ESP5011) and in a quartet with Ivo Perelman, Matthew Shipp, and Bobby Kapp (ESP5036), while being highly prolific as a leader, notably with a series of brilliant albums on AUM Fidelity. Nels Cline has spent decades changing people's ideas about the role of the electric guitar in multiple contexts, ranging from Wilco to Anthony Braxton (think about that!) as well as many projects as a leader, earning a spot on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists list. Thollem is a perpetually traveling pianist, keyboardist, composer, improviser, singer-songwriter, activist, author and teacher. He's spent most of his adult life living on the road throughout North America and Europe. His work is ever-changing, evolving and responding to the times and his experiences, both as a soloist and in collaboration with hundreds of artists across idioms and disciplines. Thollem is known internationally as an acoustic piano player in the free jazz and post-classical worlds, as the lead vocalist for the Italian agit-punk band Tsigoti (ESP4057), and as an electronic keyboardist through a multitude of projects.

Press Quotes:
"Glaring expressionism coupled with rip-roaring layers of acoustic-electric sound-sculpting maneuvers yield the bountiful fruit on this manifold studio date. ... The artists align their wares via a feeling out process, energized by Cline's note-bending exercises and strings scraping techniques, leading to a spiraling improvisational fest, designed with overlapping statements and intense three-way conversations. Lucid imagery remains a continuum as the trio's linear onslaughts intimate harrowing backdrops, abetted by Parker's creaky and ominously designed phrasings." - Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz
"Thollem's playing reminds me of early Cecil Taylor a la "Looking Ahead". Although it's less dissonant overall, he certainly displays a similar physical approach. Parker is both the glue holding the music together and the wedge pushing it apart while Nels Cline seems to choose his battles, alternating between pervasive texture and carefully spaced punctuations." - Matt Schulz, The Squid's Ear

The River That Flows Into The Sands
Monotypes by Andrew Chalk
Presented in a heavy board, quarter clothbound portfolio, each with an original frontispiece graphic and containing five original monotypes of each (300 X 400 mm) : printed on 240 gsm ivory litho paper, loose
mounted on archival black mounts
The monotypes are based on the graphic sleeves of the music album of the same name released by Faraway Press in 2005/2018. This collection further expands the nuances of literal and inferred landscape subjects
began thirteen years' ago in a more thoughtful and subjective association.
Each monotype is very much unique by virtue of the process and also a development of the subject, but retains a common thread of incorporeal presence to viewer and printmaker alike.
The River That Flows Into The Sands was entirely hand printed and bound into portfolios in January 2018 and is
available in an edition of 20 signed and numbered copies only.
Portfolio size is approx. 40 X 31 cms and is a substantial piece.
