トワイヤン （Toyen, 1902年～1980年); 1902年、チェコのプラハで生まれる。本名マリィエ・チェルミーノヴァ(Marie Cerminova） プラハのエコール・デ・ボザールで短期間学んだ後、1922年にユーゴスラビアでインドリッヒ・シュティルスキーと知り合う。 1923年、 恋人シュティルスキーと共にカフカらが属していたチェコの前衛グループ『デヴィエトスィル』に加わる。この頃から トワイヤンと名乗り始める。名前の由来はフランス語のcitoyenからｃｉを取ったものと推測される。1925年、 シュティルスキーと 一緒にパリに滞在し、『今日の美術』展に参加。それまでキュビズム的だった画風から半抽象画的な画風に変化、「詩的人工主義― ポエティック・アーティフィシャリズム」を指向する。1926年、人工主義を標榜したコンポジションを展示。27年のヴァヴァン画廊 での展示会ではフィリップ・スーポーが序文を書く。1928年、色彩主義、詩的人工主義による『フィヨルド』。1928年、パリを去り、 プラハに戻る。シュルレアリスムの影響から、30年代初頭より夢や無意識に由来した混沌としたヴィジョンを描くほか、精神の現実を 自然の形態に即して表現するようになる。一方、デヴェトシルの政治化により「赤色戦線」グループを結成。1930年代初頭、シュティ ルスキーがロートレアモンとマルキ・ド・サドに傾倒。11月、ネズヴァル、シュティルスキーらとともに国際現代文芸雑誌 『ズヴェロクルフ』を創刊。（翌年発行の第2号で終わる）。1932年、シュティルスキーの出版社「エディション66」が、トワイヤンの 挿画付で『ジュスティーヌ』のチェコ語版を出版。その後、サドを意識したエロティックでサディスティックなイメージを含む作品を 描くようになる。1934年、プラハのシュルレアリスト・グループを創設。1935年、第1回『チェコスロバキア・シュルレアリスム展』 を開催。アンドレ・ブルトン及びポール・エリュアールがプラハを訪れ、親交を結ぶ。1934年、『プロメテウス』 『磁力を持つ女』 などを描く。1937年、『置き去りにされたコルセット』『砂漠の幻影』『黄色い幽霊』『眠る女』などを描く。アンドレ・ブルトンの いう「猛禽の爪の封印をもつ多くのマルドロール的な「コラージュ」」が始まる。 1938年、『恐怖』など。1947年、パリに移り住み、 以降、亡くなるまで当地で暮らす。1980年、パリにて逝去。 1982年、ポンピドー・センターで回顧展が開かれる。アンドレ・ブルトンは トワイヤンについて以下のように語っている。「トワイヤン、感動なしにはけっして思いおこすことのできない、高貴なしるしをおびた その顔、どんなにはげしい襲撃にも深く身をふるわせながら岩のように抵抗しつづける人――彼女の眼は、光の浜辺である」。 「彼女はだれよりもデッサンに固執し、デッサンの構造の堅固さと有効さを確保し、これを唯一の骨組としてとらえるばかりでなく、 ひろがる問いかけの前で自分をとりもどすために、かえってはてしなく迷うことを自分にゆるすアリアドネの糸としてとらえるのだ」(引用）

All-star quartet Last Exit garnered its reputation with a string of unrelentingly forceful concert recordings in which it pushed the energy style of free jazz to its limits. When the group went into the studio for the only time, though, a very different sort of album resulted—very different not only from all their other output, but even from anything else ever heard from anyone at that time. Because of that, when it was released in 1988, some fans and critics didn't know what to make of it. This was, in a way, understandable, because Iron Path was so far ahead of its time that perhaps only now, over a quarter of a century later, is there an audience prepared for this album's pioneering hybrid of abstract heavy metal, unsettling ambient music, and free improvisation. Back in 1988, "Darkwave" hadn't yet been conceived, much less named and niched.

The brutal sonic assault of Last Exit's live albums is not banished; it lurks below the surface on Iron Path, sometimes allowed to break through for a moment of stark contrast. But the unremitting density of texture heard in the quartet's shows is stripped back in favor of more subtle and varied textures, sculpting an atmosphere of moody brooding and sinister suspense. And, of course, the studio also allowed for far greater sonic clarity, putting these virtuoso players in a setting that shows off their masterful command of myriad timbres.

In a world that has since become accustomed to hearing Earth, Pelican, Blut Aus Nord, Aphex Twin's Ambient Works sets, and Oöphoi, and artists such as Whote who explore the overlap between them, Iron Path can finally get its due, and an audience schooled to appreciate what it offers.
