From the beginning, Frank Zappa cultivated a role as voice of the freaks — imaginative outsiders who didn't fit comfortably into any group. We're Only in It for the Money is the ultimate expression of that sensibility, a satirical masterpiece that simultaneously skewered the hippies and the straights as prisoners of the same narrow-minded, superficial phoniness. Zappa's barbs were vicious and perceptive, and not just humorously so: his seemingly paranoid vision of authoritarian violence against the counterculture was borne out two years later by the Kent State killings. Like Freak Out, We're Only in It for the Money essentially devotes its first half to satire, and its second half to presenting alternatives. Despite some specific references, the first-half suite is still wickedly funny, since its targets remain immediately recognizable. The second half shows where his sympathies lie, with character sketches of Zappa's real-life freak acquaintances, a carefree utopia in "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance," and the strident, unironic protest "Mother People." Regardless of how dark the subject matter, there's a pervasively surreal, whimsical flavor to the music, sort of like Sgt. Pepper as a creepy nightmare. Some of the instruments and most of the vocals have been manipulated to produce odd textures and cartoonish voices; most songs are abbreviated, segue into others through edited snippets of music and dialogue, or are broken into fragments by more snippets, consistently interrupting the album's continuity. Compositionally, though, the music reveals itself as exceptionally strong, and Zappa's politics and satirical instinct have rarely been so focused and relevant, making We're Only in It for the Money quite probably his greatest achievement.

これこそ冥界から人類救済のためにもたらされた福音の音楽である！ヨシ・ワダ探索の最後を飾る最終兵器「アース・ホルン」。アルプスホルン風（というにはジャンクな印象だが）の３～10mの特殊な自作管楽器４本と電子音ドローンによる、展開もほとんどなく一定の長さの持続音をそれぞれの奏者が奏でるこの驚愕の内容は、まさにラモンテ・ヤングの70年代初頭までの演奏風景の延長にあるものだ。例えばラモンテの63年の作品「高圧線トランスの第２の夢」の84年の改作のCD（Grammavision R2-79467）を聴いてみればあまりに自明。しかもCDではダイジェストになっているが、実際は全体で３時間近くもかかるのだ！本作は1972年の作であるから、まさしくラモンテの共同体にいた時期であり、その影響をマトモに受けたことがうかがえる。

アルプスホルンという楽器での演奏というのも絶妙だ。その姿はすでに作品の本質を示している。まだ後年の「ラメント・フォー・ザ・ライズ・アンド・フォール・・・」のディープ・ヴォイスのような空間への眼差しは見られないが、バグパイプに移る前段階であることは間違いない。むしろ楽器として完成されたバグパイプに対して、本作の挑発的とさえ言える珍奇な楽器群とその演奏風景にはシアター的要素も感じられ、このあたりもラモンテの影があるのかもしれない。このあまりにも極北なリリースは、中途半端なつきあい方はできないであろう。その素晴らしさに涙し抱いて寝るしかない！35年の時を経て抱かれる日がやってきたヨシ・ワダは、本当に幸せ者である。

さて、最終兵器という言葉は、ただ最後のリリースという意味なのか・・・？EM RecordsとOMEGA POINTの連立政権がコトを穏便に済ますはずはなく、演奏すべてを収録したLP3枚組も併せて制作する。全部聴くことの価値はいうまでもなく、当時の記録写真はその大判ブックレットでこそ鑑賞に値する。マチューナスのポスターも原寸大サイズ！さらにOMEGA POINT仕様のスペシャル版では3LPにデジタル・マスタリングの完全版3CDR付き、豪華箱入りで限定50（ギャーー！）

Combining four of Wada's self-made "pipehorns" (made from plumbing materials, over three meters in length), with an electronic drone tuned to the electrical current of the performance space, this is a lost masterpiece of early minimalism, placing Wada rightfully in the pantheon with La Monte Young, Phill Niblock, Maryanne Amacher and Alvin Lucier.

ますます加速するヨシワダ探検。今回は最初のLP『ラメント・フォー・ザ・ライズ・アンド・フォール・・・』から３年後にリリースされた、これも今ではレアな『オフ・ザ・ウォール』の復刻である。手がけたのはヨーロッパ・フリージャズの中心的レーベルであるドイツのFree Music Production (FMP)。「なんでFMP？」と思った人も多いようだが、前回の「ジ・アポインテッド・クラウド」の３年前に演奏されていることを考えれば、彼のスタイルは実験的なドローン演奏から、すでに集団的な即興演奏にシフトしていた時期だったのである。
それにしてもこの派手でにぎやかな演奏！『ラメント・フォー・・・』のB面で聴かれる濃密なバグパイプのドローンは、短い反復を延々とタレ流す狂躁的没入演奏に変貌し、40分ぶっ通しで続く。ティンパニが土俗的な楔を打ち込む。この、あくまで「演奏」に重心があるこの録音の後、もともと持っていた空間への興味からインスタレーションへ発展、そしてあの「ジ・アポインテッド・・・」で完成を迎える。整然と配置された「バグパイプ状楽器」のジャケ写真は、まさにその過程を示したものだ。その到達点に向かうパワーが全開でとどろく、これまた超絶ドラッギー傑作なのである。

ヨシ･ワダの名盤の復刻であった前回からさらに踏み込んで､第２弾はなんと未発表作品の発掘である。本作「ジ・アポインテッド・クラウド」は大規模なサウンド・インスタレーションとして1987年に展開され、ヨシワダの代表的な作品として位置付けられているにもかかわらず、彼のこういう活動は、日本にはまったく伝えられてこなかった。ここに収録されているのは、パイプオルガン風の楽器と巨大な金属板やジャンク素材が組み合わされた大規模な自作楽器が、コンピュータの制御で振動したり叩かれたりするインスタレーションに加えて、様々なアーティストが参加した、展示のオープニングを告げるライブ演奏である。これは一般公開されたインスタレーションとは大きく異なる内容で、当時、本演奏を体験した人々によってのみ語り継がれ、半ば伝説化していた1987年11月8日の一夜限りのパフォーマンスなのである。

ヨシ･ワダをはじめとする即興演奏畑のアーティストによるバグパイプ、あのマース・カニングハムの公演でデヴィッド・チュードアらと共演してきたパーカッショニスト、マイケル・パグリース、そしてコンピュータのプログラムを制作したのは、同じ時期にラモンテ・ヤングの演奏でも電子音のアシストをしたデヴィッド・レイナ。
「ラメント・フォー・ザ・ライズ・アンド・フォール・・・・」のような瞑想的な作品から大きく進化し、特に中盤以降の狂躁的ともいえる集団濃密音響は、目眩がするほどにドラッギーな、秘仏開眼法要即興スペクタクル絵巻なのである！。

ヨシ・ワダ。この伝説のアーティストの作品に接したことがある人ならば、名前を聞いただけで総髪逆立つ快感に襲われるにちがいない。1943年京都生まれで、60年代末にニューヨークに渡り、ラモンテ・ヤングの永久音楽劇場に参加。フルクサスの作家としても知られている。現在もインスタレーションや実験的舞台のための音楽等、多彩な活動をしている。そのヨシ・ワダの最高傑作として名高い「Lament For Rise And Fall Of The Elephantine Crocodile」がついに復刻！オリジナル・マスターテープからの、彼の初のフルCDである。

1000mの地底からの呼び声のような、倍音に満ちたディープ・ヴォイス作（ラモンテの師匠Pandit Pran Nathから学んだ発声法による）と、バグパイプを組み込んだ自作楽器+ヴォイスによるサイケデリック麻薬ドローン。これらラモンテの影響も明らかな音楽は、一度聴けば即刻天国に連れていかれる最強アイテムだ！！しかもオリジナルLPよりもそれぞれ10分も長い完全版！
